How could you tell if a vampire were alive or dead
If a vampire were alive wouldn't he be alive in you drove a steak through his heart and he reacted?
If he was dead would he react or not? If not how would would you know if he was really dead.

They are not alive. They have ceased to be dead. They are undead. How you know whether they are alive, dead, or "otherwise," is not so easy, which is part of what makes them so dangerous to the living. Some have said that a stake through the heart is not enough, and that, to be sure, the undead should have it's head removed and burned in a fire, in case it should work it's way free from the stake and pose a further threat.
