Poor money management techniques. All you have to do is spend less than you earn and you won't get in trouble. Most of that boils down to being able to say no to yourself when you don't have the money to buy it. Yep, irresponsible self indulgence.

Scammers trick people into giving them money. Some people are wise not to get involved with anything online when it comes to being asked to give money while others are more prone to be fooled by scammers who have tricked the person. Scammers have convinced some people to give money let’s say over a cheque that is made to them and having to pay for fees to get the cheque shipped to them. That’s just an example but a word of advice is to cut yourself off from communication from someone who is asking for money online. They can start out trying to get to know you through chat and eventually they will take advantage of you.

I just watched an episode of America's Dumbest Criminals and they caught a bunch of people with outstanding warrants by notifying them they had won a contest and need to pick up the prize.

  The way you describe the story actually covers multiple sting events in multiple metropolitan areas, at least Washington DC, Detroit, and Phoenix come to mind. These events usually bring in hundreds of fugitives (most are DUIs) and get huge publicity for the police based on the cleverness of the operation, and yet, people still keep falling for them.
