I hear what you are saying, but, is it generational or is it just different personalities, or maybe a combination of both, which is probably the case. Not sure which generation your grandpa fit into, but the only grandfather I knew was born in 1914. He was a super easy-going guy but also a total drunk. Up at 4 every morning to catch fish before the sun came out, back in his chair sloshed on Seagram's by 7 AM... He seemed to know everyone around the neighbourhood and people generally liked him. The great-grandparents I knew were obviously really old by the time I could remember anything, and I don't really have fond memories of them - they seemed to both be "fun governors."

I remember it as working for free. Years worth of it .I thought I was going to end up owning the farm, He sold it and spent the money. His fathers father brought and paid for it.

I was a full time unpaid child care provider at 12. It never occurred to me that it wasn't fair, that I even should have been compensated, or that I didn't have to do it. I didn't even really realize my mother was brain damaged until I was an adult and she was dead. But I still don't get the entitlement attitude. No one owes you anything. It was never yours to begin with. Families do chores because they are part of the family and "belong" to it. My father's family had some money but I never thought of it as mine.
