No, I believe that the food industry uses the most plastic packaging by far. How many plastic food packages do you open and dispose of compared to clothing packages?

Linda Joy The article I read said that agriculture was the leading cause with fashion industry second. I don't purchase new clothing. I shop thrift store. I shop Aldi and reuse my bags. I reuse my plastic tubs for planters and also reuse them for bowls. There are stores that let you use your own containers/ bags and I don't eat out either. I often reuse my glass containers as well. They make excellent canisters. The medical industry also uses a lot of plastic, but I think some of that is necessary. What are YOU doing to prevent plastic pollution? -
notyouraveragedummy Yes, I recognize the medical industry's use of plastic. Having had several surgeries, many procedures, and countless forms of imaging in the last 20 years, I couldn't help but notice their use of plastics. At least that use is for my benefit, i.e. more sanitary. Since I can no longer do my own shopping or cooking, I'm stuck with a lot of prepared food and the packaging that it comes in. When I was physically able, I did my own shopping, cooking, reusing , and recycling. What am I doing? There's not much I can do now. Since I was always mindful of the over use of plastics, I did almost everything available to me to use resources wisely. Now, I'm at the mercy of others. -

Linda Joy Oh, and its not clothing packaging I'm talking about its the material itself. If its not cotton or hemp its probably plastic oh yeah silk is natural as well. And its third on this list: https://www.5gyres.org/plastic-pollution-facts But they did name Coca Cola as the #1 corporation for plastics pollution.

notyouraveragedummy Yes, I agree about the clothing but there is no way for us to evaluate the percentage of plastic use between the food industry and the clothing industry. That will teach Coca Cola to be so popular!

notyouraveragedummy Back in the 70s or 80s I read a magazine article written by a college professor who taught a curriculum on refuse and landfills. He actually took his students to landfills for "hands on" learning. Sorry I can't remember the exact time frame, it's been a while. The article explained that in the previous decades before the article, the highest percentage of content in land fills was newspapers. During the decade that he was writing about, the highest percentage of content in land fills was disposable diapers.

There are several areas of plastic pollution that should be considered probably at a higher rate than the fashion industry. The automotive industry uses tons upon tons of plastic in all cars, trucks, aircraft, and boats. The electronics industry uses tons upon tons of plastic in their components as well as casings. (housings). Packaging is another huge user of plastic. Considering all plastic is made from oil, mainly petroleum crude) it would seem that maybe the oil producers are behind most of the pollution in the world. Oil turned into fuel for engines to propel vehicles is only a drop in the bucket by-product of the plastic industry. Think about it!
