  • Congratulations! Genetics are a factor, but it depends on your choices. In order to lose over 100 lbs you must have been at least 100 lbs overweight to begin with, right? Also we know a lot more about weight now than we did when your mother was young. And we have more choices available to us now. Also other factors play a part, like diabetes, thyroid issues, medications etc.

Thank you, Linda, I appreciate your kindness and wish you well :) ::)
  • There may be a genetic tendency to gain weight but weight gain or loss is one of the few genetic tendencies that we can control ourselves with some effort. Losing weight will not prevent cancer. Both of my parents were average overweight for middle-aged people, not obese. My father died at age 57 from leukemia. My mother died at age 97 from dementia. I've been overweight since my forties. I've gained and lost weight a number of times in that period. I've also had three different types of cancer in the past 20 years. For some strange reason, I'm still here.

  • Well done DWW, yes genes can affect how bodies change food into energy and store fat. They can also effect peoples lifestyle choices. Certain genetic traits inherited from your parents – such as having a large appetite – may make losing weight more difficult, but they do not make it impossible. Environmental factors play a large part, as well as bad habits from childhood.
