Not really. The point wasn't just for them to die, it was to be effective in battle. Without a helmet, they could suffer a head injury more easily, making them useless in battle. Their helmets also likely contained communication equipment to help them organize an attack. If they merely wanted their soldiers to die, they wouldn't have bothered giving them an expensive aircraft either, they could have just strapped them to a rocket or shot them out of a cannon. (I'd say strap them to a torpedo, but I'm not convinced that the Japanese didn't do that to volunteers)
