  • It originated in the theater - opera to be exact. The last act usually had a song that went with it and lady opera singers are traditionally known to be fat. Thus, the song at the end of the final act being sung by a fat lady would signify the opera being over. The phrase has since referred to other things that have indefinite ending times.
