Because a CVT vehicle has no gears. That's the whole point of CVT. It's "continuously variable transmission" (as opposed to "multiple-gear-ratio transmission). Typically a CVT uses a belt of some type (think: very tough fan belt) with some sort of continuously-variable-ratio pully system. Adjusting the accelerator adjusts the ratio of the pullies, increasing or decreasing the speed and (inversely) torque of the engine.
