  • Mens sana in corpore sano. That's Latin for "a sound mind in a sound body". It's long been believed that physical health and mental soundness and accomplishment go together, so educational programs in many countries include physical education and sports in their curricula. In the United States, in the early 1960s, these programs received a particular boost from President Kennedy, who promoted the President's Physical Fitness Test, which we all had to take when I was in school. Given the growing problems with childhood obesity and the health issues and costs they involve, I think physical education remains a good idea.
  • In my day, a PE teacher would have to force some form of efforts out of fat kids for it. That all blow out of proportion when a couple of kids that had heart problems kept getting write offs from doctors for it all. Looking at kids today, they should all have standing desks and more like that.
  • Kids don't get enough exercise.
  • Idiot educators got it in their heads that since some kids were overweight, that meant ALL kids were not getting enough exercise, which necessitated another 'bloatware' class that had to be added to the curriculum...plus coaches for the sports teams had to be kept busy, doing more than just coaching. It is but one of many such examples of the 'one size fits all' approach of Education, which is one of many reasons why most kids hate school.
  • many kids get little or no exercise
  • for exercise .
  • Most kids get no or very little physical exercise.
  • I loved PE, I did long jump, high jump, 100 metres, 200 metres, discus, badminton, netball, basketball, it keeps children fit, and enables them to go on and choose sports as a career.
  • At the most basic and fundamental level, it's intended to improve the physical health of the student. At a secondary level, it's to improve the ability (both physical ability and sports training) of students such that they can play and succeed at competitive sports (team sports) for the school.
  • PE is society's legally sanctioned last-ditch effort to teach kids self-discipline while they're still young enough for it to make a difference. Many kids don't get it at home, and by the time they hit the streets after high school, they're well on their way to becoming career criminals.
  • IMHO PE is for kids physical fitness . Working on one's physical fitness is as important as intellectual fitness. We're both mind and body and soul. However while religion is important the query is on the physical.
