What kind of coating makes folk guitar strings last longest?

Phosphorus isn't a coating, it's an element in the type of bronze used. The coating that lasts longest isn't metal at all, but different types of polymers. The heavier the polymer coating, the longer the strings tend to take to sound markedly more dull, but the trade-off is that the strings will sound more dull to begin with. If you want the brightest possible tone, the only real way to achieve that is to change your strings often. If you don't mind your tone being a little bit dull, you can try coated string with thin polymer coatings (for example Elixir Nanoweb, D'Addario EXP, etc.). It's possible that your favourite brand already makes such a product. Personally, I prefer uncoated strings, since they do have a brighter tone out of the box and they seem to last long enough anyway.
