  • I think the form is changing. I think the quality of communication is a personal choice. I learned a long time ago that its the sender's responsibility to ensure the message is received. People need to learn how to get their message across. This is not just the responsibility of the younger generation to learn the communication techniques of the elderly but also for the elderly to make an effort to learn the communication style of the younger generation if they want to communicate effectively. The same goes for communication within relationships, business and family. Don't hint at what you want, don't mumble, or talk soft so people have to strain to hear you. This is a passive aggressive manipulation to make people work to understand you. Make it clear. Some people need those dots really close together or they will get lost!! Don't play games and make people guess what you want, or you will most likely be disappointed because you didn't get it!

I think texting is just another tool. It has its advantages and disadvantages. I think its less intrusive / demanding than the phone. It works well for automated notifications, like appointments that don't require a phone call. And you don't have to worry about confidential information being overheard on a text. I think on a metered phone line a text is cheaper than a call. At least that's what I've been told. Some of my friends prefer that. You can send a text and not worry about interrupting someone during their family time. They can get back to you when they're able. I think its faster and more efficient. There is not as much babbling on because they have to key it. Email has its advantages and disadvantages as well. Why don't you ask a question about that?

Also you can look back on a text message to remember what was said, you can't do that on a phone call. I especially like that with my appointments.
