verbally. ASL and semaphore do NOT work well over the phone. Smoke signals don't work well, either. When I first went to the ship I had to answer the phone "Seaman recruit (my last name) this is a nonsecure line, how may I help you?" Dude said "RECRUIT!?" and started laughing at me for still being a recruit! When answering a phone for the many restaurants I worked in I say "Thank you for choosing (whatever the name of the place is) this is Linda, how may I help you? At home I usually don't answer unless I know who is calling. Otherwise it goes to voice mail. I answer hey or hello, how you doin'?

Hi, this is Jenny Rizzo from Answerbag. I was just calling to let you know that your answer is helpful...

That all depends on personal preference. Hello is my preferred way of answering the phone. The word Hello signifies you are greeting someone. To give you my interpretation in other ways of answering the phone: Yellow is more of a southern and lazy way to answer the phone. Talk to me sounds ghetto. Joe's phone is a rugged expression. Joe speaking is a way of support, and Hi, is Brian there is a direct way to get him to the phone immediately.

Hey Jenny! How you doin'? I was just calling to let you know I liked your comment to Rick. -

To me, Joe's phone sounds like someone else answered Joe's phone for him. -

I am doing good. Thanks for giving me a call to let me know about my comment in regards to Rick. While we are talking on the phone at this time, I just feel that when a guy answers the phone with his name, it is a rugged way of saying it is his phone and no one else's in a domineering sense to further give a rational explanation. Anyways, I have another incoming call. We'll talk later. -

I understand better now, thank you! Have a blessed day! -

Okey-dokey. Sometimes when I can't answer the phone, just leave me a text message and I will reply back ASAP.

"Hi, is Brian there?" maybe needs a little context. If you have caller ID and you see Brian is calling you, you pick up the phone and, instead of saying "Hi Brian," you throw him off guard, and say "Hi, is Brian there?" Then Brian has to question himself for a second as to whether you called him or he called you. It's dumb, but it can add a little bit of fun to an otherwise boring life.

Let it go to voice mail and return the call if needed.

The classic "Hello, this is [insert your real name]." is good for me.

depends who it is doesn't it. What do you want c*nt works for half the turn outs that ring me.
