How is the resonant frequency of a molecule determined?
I'm currently fixing a microwave oven and thinking about how the magnetron's rf frequency is chosen to be the resonant frequency of water.

The frequency in question, I believe is about 2.45 GHz. Early exploration was not all that good; often just a trial and error: inject energy and see which heats the chemical most readily. Then came stories about radar getting involved, and more specific testing all around.
