Used to have row boats. My boat had an outboard engine but some places I fished would not allow an engine. so I rowed many times. First time I rowed a boat I was around 6, a Friend a couple of years older than me rented a boat on the lake at the Broadmore Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He let me row it some. when I got home and my mother found out I was in deep trouble. This was way back during WWII, in the 1940s.

Once, several of us girls rented canoes in Quebec province in Canada and rowed them most of the day.
