As time goes by we try to improve even the most unsignificant things, however mentally we seem to be going back - why?

We are not going backwards mentally and we continue to improve really significant things. Why would you think we are going backwards in any respect?

As inferred by your question -- progress in regard to material comforts and technology -- likely. As to advanced or higher thoughts, highly debatable. One could cite examples both pro and con. Many of the same beasts that humans have struggled with for history are still alive and kicking.
