The Klinger character was originally written as a very swishy and effeminate homosexual, but that didn't fly with test audiences, so the producers decided to have him portrayed as a heterosexual who was cross-dressing, in a vain attempt to get discharged from the US Army and sent home. Among insiders on the set, the "Q" stood for the original interpretation of the Klinger character: "Queer."
