I have...and I read both the book and the comic to my younger sister. Both my mom and dad have a copy, but I enjoy books by Tolkien so much I bought a luxury eddition, which I still like to read a little in from time to time.

Many times, but not for years and years now (about 10-15 I think). I much prefer the grander scope and more muscular script of LOTR, but the Hobbit has it's place, and sets the scene nicely for 'A Long Expected Party'. LOTR initially began as another children's story, and only really begins to mature in chapter 2, 'The Shadow of the Past'. Tolkien was honest when he wrote that the story 'got away from him' and developed and grew in totally unforseen ways - the book plot simply wasn't fully planned. Many people for this reason get more than a bit bogged down in the sudden change in complexity and bredth of LOTR.

Yes, the first 'proper books' I received as a child were The Hobbit and The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.

Yes, I read it. Very good book, but lik the trilogy, very involved! You had to really read it so that you could understand what the f*ck was going on, you know?

Yes I have, quite a few times. "The Hobbit" is an easier book to read than the Lord of The Rings trilogy, as it was aimed at a younger audience. It's still an excellent read, for all of that.

i bought a copy at a second hand bookshop for R4 about 17mnths before the Lord of the rings became huge and i could see the old lady at the bookshop kicking herself for it!

I read it and LOVED it. I heard about a year ago that they are making a movie from the book. I could be wrong though, so don't quote me.

I read it years ago. My mom turned me onto it when she saw what a bookworm I was. After I finished it, I went straight into the Lord of the Rings, then the Simarillion. I have all the books and re-read them periodically when I really just want to lose myself in story. (except for the Silmarillion, which is good for background, but quite difficult to read all at once, but with gems of story here and there - fills in the blanks so to speak) The Hobbit is definitely the least complicated of the books and a good book to introduce younger readers to the fantasy genre. My boys and I read it together in the evenings before bed.

I read The Hobbit for the first time when I was little, and it's still my favourite book. I've read it more times than I can count. It has a completely different way of phrase than The Lord Of The Rings triology. It's lighter. If they were all colours, The Hobbit would have brighter and cleaner colours than the triology =P

It was my first book ^_^ My daddy used it to teach me how to read. I remember trying to pronounce "Khazad-Dum"... that wasn't easy for a 4 year old... it was the beginning of an obsession. I have now read The Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings series (it's six books, not three, BTW), The Book of Lost Tales (one and two), the Silmarillion, the Lays of Belieriand, The Tolkien Reader, Unfinished Tales, The Shaping of Middle-Earth, The Lost Road and Other Writings, The Letters of JRR Tolkien, and The Languages of Tolkien's Middle Earth. I still haven't gotten my hands on The Children of Hurin, the newest book, though ^_^

Yes, and many others. Tolkiens entire Middle Earth series is excellent. The "Hobbit" and "LOTR" deal with hobbits and the familiar story line. "The Silmarillion" gives a detailed history of the Elves specifically and 12 volumes making up "The History of Middle-earth" deal with the everything leading up to the circumstances surrounding the familiar stories. These latter works were compiled and published by Christopher Tolkien, JRR's son. "The Children of Húrin" was released earlier this year and is expected to be the last of the original content of Middle Earth. Tolkien crafted his imaginary realm around the events of his life and drew many striking parallels into Middle Earth. I cannot recommend highly enough that you follow up with all these stories if you enjoyed "LOTR".

I loved 'The Hobbit'. It gives such a great explanation for the Lord of The Rings, and it really sets the theme... Giving some of the ring's history and some starts to characters really helps the reader of Lord of the Rings understand... Great books...

Heck yes read and loved it. Oddly it was required reading in 7th grade for me and I couldn't think of anything better at that point. I made me REALLY want to read and then I very much enjoyed THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. so much so I read it several times, and was very concerned the movies could do it NO justice. While the novels were better the movies did a remarkable job and I was very pleased and blown away by how well they brought my imagination to life so many years later. I tried many times to get into THE SILMARILLON(sp?) which was slao based on Middle Earth but had a hard time following or "getting into it"

With 40+ answers on here, I'm not sure my answer'll be read by the general public, but YES, I did read the Hobbit. Actually as a kid, my dad read LOTR to me as a bedtime story and my sister and I would always want him to go back and read the part about Bilbo and Gollum. I actually own The Hobbit, an animated version, on both VHS and, recently, DVD. It was one of my favorite movies as a kid because it was my favorite story.

I was never going to return to this addictive site, but since I had a bad day...I'm giving myself a thumbs up. ;) I'm the only person I know who actually loved the Hobbit more than the Lord of the Rings series. I read the Hobbit first, and loved it...then I ended up buying LOTR books all three at once. I found those to be long, and not as interesting...don't have a good reason for it. Maybe I got burnt out?! What's funny is a friend gave me Children of the Hurin and I've had it for four months...read about six pages. I guess I need a breather from the LOTR series.

I read it for the first time at the age of about 8 years or so. I saw a 50th anniversary edition in my parent's book shelf one year, and wanted to read it. For the safety of that edition, I was given my own. But alas, I own the 50th edition now! Mwahaha! If you think that's weird, at the age of 10, I wasn't allowed to see "The Fellowship of the Ring" until I had read the book first. I managed to do it too, just as it came out on VHS.

I have. It wasn't as good as the ring trilogy, but it was kind of necessary to understanding the ring trilogy.
