because we live in the 21st century where everything is computorized and your informatin is kept in those little bar codes on the passport so it can be scanned and read easily. It would take you much longer to go through immigration without it.

The chip will securely store the same data visually displayed on the photo page of the passport, and will additionally include a digital photograph. The inclusion of the digital photograph will enable biometric comparison, through the use of facial recognition technology at international borders.
