The Vatican's position has not changed, it may exist, it may not. We're only people and we don't know.
-
Forget limbo, the Pope has been busily producing a guide to driving a car. No, I don't understand why either.

The Church has pondered the suggestion of Limbo for a few hundred years and has decided that it is not a good idea. Limbo was never official doctrine. Jesus said, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved." (Mark 16:15-16) For centuries, people have wondered about children who died before they were baptized. The Bible does not explicitly state that they will go to heaven. Limbo was suggested as the place where unbaptized babies went when they died. This idea was never official Church doctrine and has been rejected. The Church now says that it is not sure what happens to unbaptized babies when they die but she entrusts them to the mercy of God. For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church section 1261: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt2sect2.htm#1261 With love in Christ.

They bent over backwards to analyse the situation, and some people are steel drumming for it, but it... ah, I can't think of a closing gag. ...damn it.

I believe the term is purgatory, and from what I have heard, it was merely a ploy for devious men to make a buck forcing others to buy things to help their past relative out of said "limbo". Also, purgatory/limbo is but a perversion of the Old Testament's Abraham's bosom, for that was where all of the OT saints were, with all non saints across the gorge in hell. The area formely occupied as Abraham's bosom is now dedicated soley to hell, once Christ descended and moved all OT saints to heaven from the center of the earth.

As far as I know, the same that it has always been. Just an idea that some Catholic scholars like to kick around, an idea neither approved nor rejected in any official way by the Vatican.
