<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Mattresses Need Support
Mattresses do need some type of foundation; however, that foundation does not have to be a so-called "box spring." According to Consumer Reports, "there's nothing springy about a box spring; it simply provides support." Since the goal is to support the mattress, any hard surface would suffice. This can include a solid platform, wooden slats or the floor.
On the Other: Coiled Box Springs May Increase Comfort
A true "coil upon coil" box spring is designed to better absorb shock, which may lead to added comfort, and thus a better night's sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the direct and indirect impact of daytime sleepiness and sleep disorders on the national economy is estimated to be $100 billion annually. Be careful, though. Coils were not found in any of the 12 box springs tested by Consumer Reports.
Bottom Line
Given that "coil upon coil" box spring technology is absent in the majority of modern foundations, box springs are predominantly irrelevant. The most important aspect is mattress support, which can be fulfilled through any type of solid platform.
