The thought of applying for SSDI benefits may conjure up bureaucratic nightmares of endless paperwork, waiting periods and inevitable conflicts, but applying for Social Security disability insurance (SSDI) doesn't have to be difficult. By knowing what you're getting into before you start the process, you'll be much better able to navigate the application procedure and be more comfortable while doing so.

Applying Online

Applying online is the easiest way to fill out the application (see Resources). Going through the application process requires you to accurately and truthfully fill out the application to the best of your ability. You must sign the application yourself---you cannot have someone else sign in your place. You'll also have to fill out a medical history report and be prepared to submit any corroborating documents with the application, or send them in to a Social Security office.

Information Required

There's a lot you need to fill out when it comes to your SSDI application. You must include basic information like your name, date of birth and Social Security number. But you must also fill out more detailed information about your earning history, detailed information of your medical history (including a disability report), any worker's compensation history, the name of your employer, military service history and your Social Security statement. (Note: You can request a Social Security statement if you don't already have one.)

Provide Documentation

Make sure you have your original birth certificate or a certified copy, naturalization papers and military service papers if appropriate, as well as W-2 forms or self-employment tax returns from the previous year. Even if you're unable to get copies of all the necessary documentation, you should provide everything you are able to get.

Apply in Person or on the Phone

If you can't apply online, you can also go to any Social Security office around the country and apply in person. You can also call (800) 772-1213 to make an appointment or apply over the phone.

I suggest you get a lawyer that specializes in social security disability benefits and be prepared to wait at least two years for your case to go to court. And if you go to a homeless shelter in the process they will take over 250 a month out of your backpay for staying there. Just going by my own experience. On the other hand my sister was approved right away, but she had been hospitalized for mental health issues prior to applying.
