Function

Purity

Formulations of 100% glycerin are uncommon, because their properties are still useful when combined with water, lanolin and other lotion ingredients. However, pure formulations do exist and are nonirritating, and some people prefer to use 100% glycerin to soften the skin.

Effects

Pure glycerin is still a humectant, and it attracts water from the air to moisten the skin. Because of this, the pure formulation will eventually absorb water and become an 80% glycerin formulation.

Concentrations in Soaps

Although nearly all soaps contain some glycerin, high-content glycerin soaps contain up to 20% glycerin and are touted to be softer on the skin. There are no known formulations of 100% glycerin soap, however, as it is usually formulated as a liquid oil.

Considerations

Although glycerin is nonirritating, it may combine with ingredients that irritate sensitive skin. Always check labels before using new products.
