When cutting hair, you will use a few different utensils, including hair clippers. Each hair clipper has a guard with a specific number written on it. To avoid problems, it is important to know what these numbers represent before using clippers.
Clipper Guards
Clipper guards are combs that go over the blade of the clipper to decrease the length of the amount of hair being cut off.
Guard Lengths
Clipper lengths represent the length of hair that is left on the head. As you increase the number of the guard, you increase the length of hair on the head, or decrease the amount of hair being cut.
Clipper Number 1/2 to 2
Clipper #1/2 is 1.5mm, or 1/16 of an inch Clipper #1 is 3mm, or 1/8 of an inch Clipper #2 is 6mm, or 1/4 of an inch
Clipper Number 3 to 5
Clipper #3 is 10mm, or 3/8 of an inch Clipper #4 is 13mm, or 1/2 of an inch Clipper #5 is 16mm, or 5/8 of an inch
