You can't assume that it runs Cobol. In fact, I happen to know that my own bank uses a variety of languages and Cobol was never mentioned, though I don't know whether ATMs are one of those few places where it might be in place. Still, it is a venerable language. Another is MUMPS, which is just over 40 years old.

Yes, I worked with Cobol, when I was in computer programming, back in the day.
