Not just nitrogen, but nitrates in particular are "plant food". Too much of it released into water - especially enclosed lakes, or continuous release into a bay, can cause the plant to grow to such an extent that they choke other forms of life. Other forms such as nitrites, ammonia or nitric acid - all of which contain nitrogen - can be poisonous.
