I can actually answer this one pretty quickly, exactly 3 gallons worth, my car has 3 gallons of gas when the gas says empty and the light comes on, i suppose this was so when the low fuel light came on you would have some fuel to get to a station.

You're usually left with more than a gallon. Some cars may "hiccup" when low on fuel while others will have a gas light come on when you are running to those last reserves.
