In about 5 billion years JuJubee. You and your daughter have nothing to worry about.
-
You and your daughter have plenty of time. The sun will become a supernova and eat pretty much the whole galaxy.
-
Yeah, but it's nothing to worry about, we'll all be long gone.
-
This happens to all stars - it's part of their life cycle. However, at the rate we are going, humans could be extinct billions of years before this happens.
-
Yea, but the human race is most probably going it kill itself long before. And if not, we won't depend just on our sun.
-
Yeah... Not for ages yet, though.
-
Good science teacher...actually teaching stuff....yeah...about 5 billion years from now.
-
Yes, it's true, but don't worry. I'll protect you.:)
-
No, the Sun will not explode. This is a common myth that has already been dealt with several times. So, rather than writing a new answer, I am going to just refer you to one of the other questions where I have already posted an answer. http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/42178

no i have not and hope like hell she is wrong!! LOL!
-
Not in our life at all
-
One day it will happen, we have got to be smart enough to come up with some solutions before then, if we don't blow ourselves up first! ;0)
-
Yeh, I heard about that, apparently it'll happen in a few billion years time..... so I'm not overly worried about it!
-
+3 from me too ripple... even though you dont know what the hell youre talking about...jk
-
Yes, all stars do die. This is true. From what I gather, we wont be around to see it anyway. Millions of years from now, the sun will die.
-
Of course not Glenn, but at least the teacher is giving them something they cannot get at home....not all 5th grade teachers are as intelligent as you and me. (and you R)
-
Love, it's going to expand, not explode. But it will eat the entire solar system. Pretty soon, too: only a few billion years from now. LL&L
-
The Sun will die, but unless you are immortal, you have nothing to worry about.
-
It will "explode" in a non explosion sense. It will expand greatly as it becomes a red dwarf, and it should, encompass the earth.
-
Not in this life time thats for sure :)
-
Hm.. that's the simple version. It's pretty much astro physics 101, I'm surprised you've never heard of it before. What will happen is that in about 4 billion years, the sun will begin to increase in size, until it becomes so big that it'll consume the earth
-
That's actually not quite right, but the result is the same. The Sun is a medium size star, and not large enough to become a nova or supernova. It will eventually (assuming the theories are correct, and they seem to be) turn into a red giant star. It will expand just about to the orbit of Mars, meaning that Earth's position will actually be inside the Sun. As I saw others mention, though, this won't happen for another 4 billion years or so. We'll either have moved elsewhere at that point, or we won't be around to care.
-
TRUE, BUT IF HUMANS EXIST THEY'D DO LIKE THE MARTIANS DID AND BUILD UNDERGROUND, LIKE THE FUTURISTIC VIEW OF FULL SURVIVAL, IN MY OPINION.
-
Well, all stars burn out eventually, and all stars will then either explode, or turn into a dead rock...so yes it will happen but she'll be long gone by then.

5-14-2017 Predictions about the sun are based on current assumptions, some of which are obviously false. For instance everybody assumes the sun is powered by fusion. That implies the inside is hotter than the outside and the reverse is true. But nobody will acknowledge that because then they would have to admit they don't have a clue.
