He accidently ratted out his brother. he gave information to the wrong people which led to a hit attempt on his life. Fredo wasnt smart and he thought he was helping his family not hurting it.

He was the oldest son, and due to his "slowness," wasn't considered by his father, Vito Corleone, to become the head of the Family after his death. Michael was chosen, and there was jealousy. Fredo betrayed Michael to Roth, which would explain the machine-gun death attempt near the beginning, etc.
