    There are statutes of limitations on old debts like electric bills but the rules and amount of time vary from state to state and it is only in terms of taking you to court. Here is a terrific website that lists the rules and time for each state: http://www.bcsalliance.com/y_debt_sol.html The way an electric company gets around it is to just refuse to turn your electricity on until you pay the debt. If they are the only game in town and you owe the debt, ask if you can make payment arrangements.
