Have you checked the fuel and air filters ?

My first guess would be that your idle air controller (IAC) is not working. When the IAC fails, the engine does not get any air, unless you press the "gas" pedal (which actually controls air) http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/0/170/article/Ford_Explorer_IAC_Fix.html http://www.explorer4x4.com/iac.htm If you're lucky, you might be able to remove and clean it. Otherwise, you'll need to replace the valve. Good luck
