Sounds like a fungal infection and the worst place to go is to get a pedicure...that's probably where you got it in the first place. You need to go see a Podiatrist.

Sounds like she has a fungal infection under the toenails and it has spread to the skin. You can treat the skin with Lotrimin or Lamisil or the like, but its going to take a prescription to get the stuff under the nails. While you are at the doctor, get him to check blood sugar levels, as fungal infections are sometimes a sign of diabetes.

Hot wax footbaths are a wonderful dry foot treatment and would be soothing for your mom. As for nails..should be examined by dermatologist. They will scrape a sample from below nailbed which is then analyzed. Treatment can take 6-12mos. to clear.
