Sorry christen!I've very little idea of western songs!

Thank you for that; it is really helpful to get the lyrics that way. They were written by Mike Altman, apparently related to the director of the movie; he never wrote any other lyrics. The music was written by Johnny Mandel who wrote extensively for films, including the well known song, "The Shadow of Your Smile", which he co-wrote with Paul Francis Webster, that won the 1965 Academy Award for Best Song and the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1966. 'Suicide is Painless' has been covered by jazz artists, including pianist Bill Evans.

Yes when MASH first aired I liked the tune so found the lyrics. I was a bit shocked that they would allow such a song even without the lyrics on national television at the time.

I knew, and the lyrics were written by the director's fourteen year old son, which must have been nice for his dad to read.......

You asked this question under the 'Television' category, so your question is nonsense. The lyrics are for the film, not the TV show. The Queen of Pedantic strikes again.
-
The Song is "Suicide Is Painless" "Painless" was the name of the dentist in the movie.
-
I did! I had to choose a song when I was a young girl, to learn for my first music piece on acoustic guitar and chose this song only because it was the theme song to MASH. Of course when I learned the words, I was perplexed!
