My mum used to always say to me that if your ears are burning it meant that someone was talking about you, but since ive been to uni noone else has heard that before, is my mum MAD or have other people heard about it too.

My mum didnt tell me that, BUT my friend always goes on about that, another wierd one she always says is if you sneeze someones thinking about you....wierd!?

I have heard that one too. I have also heard if your palms itch you are about to get some unexpected money and if your nose itches someone is going to come for a visit.

The way I heard it, if your ears are ringing then someone is talking about you.. Haven't heard the 'ears burning' theory.

Both. I've heard of it from my mum, but she's also a total nutter, so they could both be true. Other people have heard of it, *and* your mum's crazy.

I've heard that, it's really well known in our family anyway. Also, if your nose is itching it means you're going to have an argument, if your feet itch, it means you will soon be treading on strange ground, right hand itching - coming into some money, left hand itching - losing some money. I'm sure there's loads more...

My mom's 69 and she used to tell me the same thing growing up. When I'd walk into the room she'd say "were your ears burning?" if she'd been talking about me.

This belief could be more than 800 years old. The superstition seems to be common and well distributed. It may have its roots in middle age England. If the same superstition is in Europe, Australia, America and elsewhere it tends to suggest a common and much older source. Think about it. I am from Florida. I was told that if you hear ringing it means someone is talking about you. This seems a reasonable subjective conclusion. The mouth speaks. The ear hears. If you hear something that sounds like a distant sound then perhaps it comes from a distant or faint source. Whether or not there is any real science to support this belief I can not say. Without medicine I would have to conclude tinitus is caused by a supernatural reason. Is my mother Mad?

I've read it before but I've never felt them burning. Actually I had an occasion to field test that hypothesis. My brother and a friend were talking about me in another room. They didn't know that I was home and that I could hear what they were saying. This enabled me to focus on their conversation long enough to determine that there was no noticeable rise in the temperature of my ears. ;)

I have heard that. Although the version I remember was if your left ear hummed or burned someone was talking about you in a good way and the right ear meant someone was talking about you in a bad way. Weird, huh?

Yeah this is a very common saying especially if you’re the topic of conversation in your absence “I’ll bet their ears are burning”! “we were just chatting about you! Were your ears burning”? It’s a classic English idiom……..
