Do you think it's inappropriate for a surgeon to crack jokes during a surgery?

not if that is how he/she deals with stress...I would rather have an at ease surgeon rather than one that is consumed by stress

depends. I had a surgeon that did it with me but he did it to calm me down and trust me, I needed it. I had already had ike 5 shots of valium. I think it depends on the patient and the situation

It does depend on the situation...but for the most part, I don't see why not. It helps put everyone at ease. . However if you are a nervous patient and are awake for the surgery, maybe not such a good idea. Or if you are awake for the surgery and can't move your head...because laughing may be an issue.

Depends on the surgeon, the joke, and the patient in question. Hopefully the surgeon has met the patient at least once before the operation, so he/she can judge what humor might be appropriate.

Is usually to put you at ease. Unless hes making fun of one of your body parts, then Id say that was inappropriate. I really dont want to hear my Proctologist say oh man when I bend over. lol

Not only jokes can be used but impersonations too and the surgical instruments can be used as props............

I think it would be very relaxing and ease the tention a bit if the doctor told jokes. Ever see M*A*S*H? That's a great example.

no, it is done all the time. Surgery is a job like anything else, and as long as the patient is stable and the surgery is going well,,, we all talk and share and laugh like any other person at work. I am not a surgeon, I am a surgical nurse....;) Surgery is really quite a fun job btw.

It takes me a very strong dose to put me down. Even after that I know all that is happening to me. The guys talked all crap inside the operation theater. Once this renowned gastro enterologist was peering down my stomach while talking to another client on the cell phone and did a wrong diagnosis.I suffered for two years and later it turned out all wrong for which I had to undergo surgery also!No ethics, that guy had!

After my dentist numb my jaws and mouth, he was pulling on a tooth and asking me, "Is this the right one?" I did not know he was joking. I was just thinking in my head, "I can't feel anything, How can I know which one he has to pull?" I really thought he was asking for guidance. But he pulled it out within seconds, so I realized it was just a joke on his part. I also thought, "maybe he asking that just to know if the area was numb or not, whether I could feel any pain."

If I need a surgeon it's probably serious, I would hope that his/her mind is on the task at hand and not thier Comedy Store aspiration's.

If I am the patient on the table and unconcious... I don't care. If I am assisting in the surgery and the joke is not vulgar, I would laugh.

I would probably want my surgeon to be relaxed when operating on me, not under too much pressure. But I wouldn't want him to be having too much fun either :/ tough call.

Id rather have a lighthearted Dr. thats feeling good in the OR than one thats a pisser and cranky.

It depends on the jokes. If he/she is make jokes about the patient they should lose their license. If the doctor is making jokes about some procedure or something unrelated that's just the doctor's personality. If the jokes are inappropriate the doctor should be reprimanded. Even under anesthesia the brain is still working and the ears function.

i think it can help reduce tension, besides i would be joking even if the doc doesn't.

since I have worked in operating room during surgeries I will say it happens a lot, but also depends on doctor and team. everyone knows when its time to be serious and when time to joke.

laughter is the best medicine! I did surgery for a while, before I saw the light and did family medicine. For my patients who were awake, we'd have great fun telling jokes. It helps (the one's who are awake) to relax, puts their mind at ease, conveys to them that what ur doin' is a piece of cake (hopefully). Kids love jokes, and expecially need the distraction. For the patient's who are asleep, we have normal conversations, talk about life, friends, what we did at the weekend, and of course joke! Wudn't you prefer a "Human" doctor with a sense of humour as opposed to a robot?
