Even more ridiculous are those fools who insist on everyone calling them "Boss" instead of their first names? I know a 25 year old idiot (from good ole' family money his family earned during the slave trading years here in Raleigh, NC) who is indignant on everyone calling him "Boss." Even more annoying are my fellow PhDs who answer both their home and work phones, "this is Dr. such and such." Hubris or an extremely Low Self Esteem - it's usually both.

I do - he insists on it. When we first met I asked him if he prefered, "Mr. _______" and he said, "no, just _____" You can't go wrong by calling him/her "Mr.______" or "Ms_______" (Never EVER assume Mrs. or Miss...that can just get you into a peck of trouble right there if you get someone on the wrong day). If they correct you and say that you can call them on a first name basis - all the better, and you've scored points for being repsectful.
