I'm not sure what the average fine is, but in most states the penalty is an automatic license suspension.

around here about 75 bucks, now when that happened to me, you go to court, and prove that you had coverage on the day of the ticket, and they dismiss the no insurance, depends on the judge I guess.

In Iowa, it is anywhere from $250 up.

I am pretty sure they dont take your license away in Texas but the fine is more than what the insurance would have cost. It increases each time you get one too.

The penalty for driving without insurance varies from state to state. In some states, your vehicle tag can be seized and your car impounded. In addition, some states impose heavy fines for those who drive without auto insurance. Limited sates fine a fee of $150 to $500 for driving without insurance. When you take into consideration that you will pay higher insurance rate for at least the next three years, and the other expenses involved, it gets very expensive. The consequences can be far more serious if you are involved in an accident and do not have insurance. You may have to comply with the financial responsibility laws (SR22, SR22s, SR16) including having to pay for any injuries or damages out of your own pocket.

The state of Colorado is tough its $500 for the first offence.

Utah...that "pretty great state".... $1,600 fine. You loose your license. Then your insurance takes a hike or is cancelled. If you make peace with the courts who extract the money, you can, for a fee, apply for your driver's license to be re-instated. But, they'll make you supply an SR-22 for 3 years. I figure my ticket cost me 40 hours of time, 100 hours sleep, and in three years a total of $5,500. A drunk driver that kills someone has to carry an SR-22 for 3 years. If you've driven for 10 years without insurance you will be forced to carry an SR-22 for 3 years. If your insurance was cancelled because ChoicePoint or some other data aggregator screws up and provides erroneous information to your insurance company and you happen to drive and get caught, you too will carry an SR-22 for 3 years. Who own's the American dream? Insurance Companies.
