Not unless those higher up are easily ingluenced by chisma (gossip). And unless you clear that stuff up right away. I'd tell those idiots to keep their mouth's shut if they don't have anything nice to say. PS: Is ingluenced a word? Perhaps I meant influenced.

Any Gossip has the potential to ruin all kinds of things. A career? oh yea.

It certainly can. Those that listen and act on gossip, are those that listen and act on gossip. It can harm a reputation, so i am sure it can destroy a career. There are some mighty vicious people.

I think SUSPICION can be more damaging than facts. Suspicion goes unresolved. But, there are exceptions, ask any Clinton....LOL at myself. It is better to be talked about than ignored!

Gossip most certainly can. Unfortunately it is part of any work environment and can be hard to avoid. Try to not take part in it or offer up fodder that can keep it going, that is about all one can do. http://www.cvtips.com/the_saboteurs.html

Any gossip has a destructive nature if it is believed. Run away from it, and if it's you that's doing it ( we all have done it or do it at some point), please just go to the horse with the issue at hand. Solution minded, I assume.
