In 1998 I had a 98 Eclipse. I didn't race it but it was stock & very fast. Since they are 10 yrs old now, you could pick one up for cheap. They haul ass with a little tuning & nitrous because they have very little metal to the body. All of the bumpers are plastic.

I was in the same situation at the time. I absolutely recommend the toyota celica i bought one and added turbo, body kit, nitrous and a nice intake. i have a 2002 celica which cost today roughly 7000-8000 you can get it cheaper if you shop around. the 2000 and 2001 celicas are also very nice i entered a few races with relatively high stakes. $800 for my first race i faced a 98 civic, 2000 eclipse, and a nissan skyline. i won by a good margin. You will need to get the add-ons though. ABSOLUTELY go for the celica!!

Go for a 70's Camaro. They came with 350's in most cases, which are extremely common and have made over 1200 HP on pump gas using turbos, so they're definitely capable of making power. Also, a Camaro is very common and you can get parts for the extremely cheaply. There is also a lot of knowledge about Camaros on the web so you can know what works and what doesn't without having to waste your money and finding out for yourself.

You need to go Jap these dayz, basically the best you can afford to start with, the older skyline is a lotta car and could be a good bet, very "busy" and hopefully, you will be able to do all the hop ups yourself, I did, and I am a girly.... or was then anyway ...... lol !

Go Swedish on this one. Buy a Saab. Don't know your age, but if you're generally young, you'll waste all of your "tuning" money on insurance payments. Saabs have very cheap insurance, and if you get an "Aero" version, they'll come stock with around 250hp. And you can shop around and find them for VERY VERY cheap!

I THINK A JAPANESE WOULD BE THE BEST WAY TO GO!!! A HONDA CIVIC, AN MITSU ECLIPSE...... I DON'T THINK A BIGGER BLOCK (AMERICAN MUSCLES) CAN BE YOURE CHOICE, YES THEYRE GREAT!!! BUT NOT AS CHEAP AS A SMALL 4 CYLINDER WITH BIG TURBO!!!! AND OF COURSE, NOT AS FAST AS SOME OF THEM!!! DON'T FORGET THE DODGE NEON SRT-4!!!! THERES THE NEW CALIBER SRT-4 BUT MINIVAN STYLE... =S MAZDASPEED 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
