I was supposed to be in school. However I had skipped that day to be with my partner on their birthday. We were at my house and it came on the news. It is funny how you never forget where you are when you first learn about a tragedy. I can still remember where I was when Princess Di passed.

I was in my living room watching it live when the second plane hit. I was just about to leave for work. I lost my cousin (it was her second day back at work after maternity leave) and three dear friends (two who also worked in the towers and one who was a NYC Firefighter), as well as many neighbors and acquaintances. I could see the smoke and fighter planes from my house. It was such a terrible tragedy! http://www.national911memorial.org/site/PageServer?pagename=homepage2#

I was in middle school at the time. We were watching it on TV in the Choir room because everyone in the office was on the speakers to tell the teachers to turn on their TVs. We all just sat there in dead silence. Non of us really let it sink in to what was really going on. Most of us never even heard of the twin towers. But I remember thinking "when are they going to let it out that its a joke; nothing like this ever happens here; this joke is getting old." Then we know the rest of the story. But, ya, that's where I was.

I was driving to a trial. (I am a lawyer.) It was very scary because a normally whacko d.j. was on the radio in near-tears and trying to convince people this was NOT a joke. I got on the phone, called my husband and tried to figure out if I should turn around and go home since it was WWIII or something. But I live on the West Coast and even though he and I talked on the phone the whole 45 minute drive, in the end I went into town and was surprised to find that nobody was really acting as though it was a big deal. We engaged in business as usual. (This primarily, I believe, because it was this judge's last trial before she could start her retirement.) So during the day I had to pretend like nothing had happened. And when I drove home in my car, I cried all the way home for each of three nights of this trial.
