It depends on what is causing the spot. If it is just dry it may be at a higher elevation which means you need to level it with the rest of the lawn or water more intensely in the area. You can get down close and dig a small spot and see if you have larvae or bugs doing it to your lawn, and if you have moths flying up when you mow, that is a tell tale sign you could have a bug problem as well. Also, if the spots are small and round, it could be your neighbors dog urinating on the lawn.
