I don't think so, but common courtesy doesn't seem to be well respected in modern American society. At least from my point of view.
-
I think it is. OR Maybe they didnt hear you?
-
I think some people may not be familiar with the custom.
-
Some people don't want to be "blessed" I guess.
-
i don't think it's rude; they are prolly just busy.
-
I've never had someone not say thank you but if they didnt I would assume they didnt hear me or if they did hear but still no response i might assume they took offense by me saying, bless you.
-
I usually do say "thank you" when I am in public, but very often, I simply say "excuse me"
-
I do not believe in God, but I do say thank you when someone says bless you after a sneeze, why? No idea tbh, guess its just habit.
-
Most will either say "excuse me" or "thank you" if they hear you. I would say they probably didn't hear you.
-
how about if someone responds "keep your religion to yourself!" ?
-
I think you wished God's blessing upon them for your own small and selfish reasons. . I'm actually a little embarrassed when they say "thank you". It's like getting a "thank you" for speaking English. .
-
I'll say "Bless you" but it's cool if the sneezer doesn't say anything back. No point in sweating the small stuff, you know? Besides, he or she may not, uh, be able to talk right then, if you catch my drift.
-
Social conditioning by a society that doesn’t give a damn--That’s my hypothesis
-
I have noticed that, about 45% of the time people say thank you. I always say thank you when I am blessed after sneezing. I love it when people have good manners. I think people should say thank you, especially if someone went out of their way to acknowledge them.
-
Thanking them would be akin to acknowledging them to be in fact a God themselves. I'm not about to go there.
-
"God blessed you!" is a Dark Ages ritual that came about because people actually believed a sneeze was an evil spirit leaving your body. One replied "Thank you!" to God, not to the person who mentioned the blessing. Since we are now fully aware of the purpose of sneezes, and the complete lack of role demon spirits play in them, the custom should be able to quietly slip away. Personally, I'm with Seinfeld on this one. Why don't we say something else, like "You are SOOO good-looking?" You'd probably get a "thank you" then.
-
It may not be. They are just caught off guard!
-
How can you assume what someone means? I don't go out of my way to get offended by someone for zero reason. Maybe they don't know your protocol. When you ask God to bless someone, you have the same blessing bestowed on you anyway. It's not between you and the snezee, it's between you and the one you are asking. Wanting a thank you reward just proves your only in it for a compliment.
-
It's not rude, I don't say thank you, I do not wish to be blessed in the first place. I'm not intending to be rude at all but i think it's a silly ritual to have to go through everytime you sneeze
-
I disagree with you. I don't find it rude at all. I find the people who expect "Thank yous" to be the rude ones in that situation.
-
Rude yo...
-
I don't day bless you to many people,I just say bless you if I want to say it to the person after they sneeze I always say thank you to my friends if they bless you when I sneeze,it does sound a bit rude if they don't say thank you,I can sound queit when I say bless you but I think people still say thank you X3 you've given me something good to think about <3

What do you say when people burp, fart, trip on a rug (provided that they don't fall or otherwise injure themselves), or do any of the other thousand and one odd things that humans do from time to time when they lose the tiniest bit of control of their bodies or functions? Personally, I find it rude to have someone say to me, in effect, "Hey, I noticed that you sneezed, and now I'm going to mention it." If someone has a strange custom that has to do with any of the other things that I do from time to time, I'll ignore them, too. Thanks for asking.
-
I'm pretty sure that whatever courtesy implied as it began no longer means as such today. It's just an everyday thing and people don't care. When someone says bless you to me after I sneeze, I just say "arigatou" ha ha.
-
Definately rude. I find more and more that people are lacking basic courtesy and manners lately. It's a huge pet peeve of mine. How hard is it to say "please" and "thank you"? Really. It's sad.
-
What part of "thank you" is rude? :)
-
Exactly!!! That is so god damn irritating, they can at least bless you back or thank you, it's common courtesy.
-
I believe people who don't say, "Thank You," have pissed or crapped in their undies...from all that sneezing. Therefore, being thankful ain't high on the list. ;) jk Otherwise, I'm sure they would say "thanks." :)
-
Obviously from what other answers imply, that's not the way you communicate.
-
No. Here people usually say thank you back. But if they didn't I wouldn't assume they were rude. And I don't say it because I expect them to say thank you, nor do I expect it.
