Why do people say "thank you" when someone lets you go at a four way stop? The people in the other car can't hear you.

i give hand motions like a wave and smile... if you know they are saying "thank you" you can read their lips.

Most people I know when they say thanks, they look at the other driver. Sure, the other driver can't hear them but they can tell what they said by the way their lips moved. Also it's just plain the right thing to do.

Probably for the same reason people call the guy a fucker who cuts them off in traffic.
