About 10 years ago the legal age for a babysitter was 12, it might have changed since then though. There were also many restirctions on that age(certain hours and durations, etc.).

I believe its 12.

Children in New Zealand aren't allowed to be left alone at home until the age of 14. An episode of cops last night featured a mother who had been locked out of her house. Her 9 year old son was completely trashing the place, and the police had to be called in and after much pleading with the kid they eventually had to break in, and found him under the bed... So I think that if you do want to leave a 9 year old alone at home, you do so at your own risk.

It's different depending on where you live. I believe in the USA the state determines age guidelines. Where I live a 14 year old can babysit for up to 3 hours. A 13 year old can be left alone for 1 hour.

I was told there is no legal age for a child to be left in on its own,as every child is different and developes at a different rate,it depends on the maturity of the child. A health visitor told me this as i asked the same question, obviously you would not leave a child in over night on its own,nor would you alow a younger child to be responsible for another. The legal baby sitting age in the uk is 14

It's been between 13 and 14 where I live

This varies by state. Some states have laws that specify an age. Some states have laws that are ambiguous (e.g. "a child may only be left without adult supervision once the child is of a requisite age that he or she can handle the responsibility"). Some states have no laws on the subject.

In the UK there is no legal age which is a disgrace , it is left to the parents discretion. They used to have a legal age of 14 years I would imagine that each state has a different law on the subject none of them adequate for child safety.

There is no legal age in the uk. Although you are responsible as the adult for the children left alone including the baby sitter. If something happens where the emergency services are involved then you are liable to be prosecuted for neglect.

There is no legal age in New Jersey USA. In my job as a case manager, I checked with the local childrens' services agency because a second grade teacher was concerned that some of her 7 and 8 year old students were at home alone sometimes. I was told it was a matter of individual judgement.

There are very few states in the U.S. with legal minimum ages for leaving children home alone, but many state agencies have published guidelines. Illiniois, Maryland and Oregon are a few of the states with specific ages specified in their laws. 12 years of age appears to be the most common recommendation. http://www.latchkey-kids.com/latchkey-kids-age-limits.htm provides one guideline from a California agency representative who suggests that 8 year olds and over can be left at home for up to several hours (usually after school before a parent gets home from work). This site also provides a state by state comparison with references.

I would have to say between 12-13 years old,but depending on the child`s maturity and ability to handle certain situations...such as emergencies...they should show alot of good common sense as well !
-
Not where I live, but the general guideline for a kid to stay home alone is 12.

14-16 in most states
