<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: The Company's Claims
Dannon, the maker of Activia Yogurt, claims that regularly eating its product will help regulate your digestive system. The company bases this on studies that found that the probiotic in the yogurt, Bifidus Regularis, can reduce the amount of time it takes food to pass through the digestive system. The assumption is that this will reduce constipation, bloating and gas.
On the Other: The Hard Science
Unfortunately, no research has been done to support or refute these claims. Dannon's studies did not look into the yogurt's effects on gas. In addition, studies have shown that people with irritable bowel syndrome or lactose sensitivities experience worse gas when they eat dairy products, including yogurt. For those people, it may be best to avoid Activia.
Bottom Line
While many people believe that Activia has reduced their gas problems, there isn't any research available to support or deny this. As always, advertising must be taken with a grain of salt. However, if your symptoms are not caused by dairy products, it may be worthwhile to try Activia and see if it works for you.
