A bad manager is someone who - doesn't clearly and fully express to the people under him/her what they should be doing (their tasks/responsibilities/roles) - doesn't give regular feedback (including praise and constructive criticism) - isn't consistent with reprimands and punishments (like you do something once, and your manager doesn't say anything at all, so you think it's the right thing to do, but when you do it again, and they throw a fit at you and say you should know better; and playing favourites would also fall under this category)
