  • My kids never slept in a crib. I was always afraid of SIDS because that is how one of my uncles died. I apparently stayed in the crib till I was 18 months old then I just crawled out on my own.
  • My daughter (who is four) slept happily in her crib until she was two and a half. We moved her to a toddler bed after her brother was born because we thought we'd need the crib for him (HA! He slept on my head until he was 16 months old). My son (who's two now) just out-of-the-blue decided to climb out of his crib the other night so we've coverted his crib into a big kid bed and barely getting by the past few nights. My kids share a room and it's always been fairly easy to get them to settle down to sleep, but now that the man has free reign of the bedroom (and all twenty thousand possible distractions from sleep that dwell there)he's been burning the midnight oil. The first night was the worst. The next night was a bit better, since neither of the kids had afternoon naps. Today is day three - still no naps this afternoon but I managed to get both kids in bed and asleep by 9:30. And tomorrow is another day =)
  • I was afraid of the whole kid climbing out of the crib thing. So I got him a toddler bed when he was just a little over one year old. The funny thing was that even though I had a gate in the hallway to keep him in the bedrooms area. I woke up and couldnt find him (its funny now) until I looked under his bed. He had apparently rolled off and rolled under the bed all the way to the wall. It was really cute once I wasn't worried anymore.
  • My daughter went into a big girl bed by age 2 b/c she was climbing out of it. My son is 2yrs and 3 months... still hasn't figured out that he can climb out... I'll keep him in there as long as I can!!
  • Be careful when selecting a "big kid bed". I was a nanny for a little girl named Mackenzie whom I shared a room with. And I awoke several times at night to "unstick" her from between the rail and the mattress. Because of the way they put the rails on the toddler bed "rollers" can easily become wedged diagonally between the mattress and the rail. For my younger brother and sister, we had a toddler bed with one rail removed. It is safer for the kid to roll out of bed onto the carpet. It actually surprises me that these toddler beds haven't been recalled.
  • My son started climbing out of his baby bed when he was 2. I caught him doing it one day and went straight to Wal Mart and got him a toddler bed.
  • I took my children out of the crib at about age two and a half. They start climbing out around then, and could fall and hurt themselves.
  • my son who is 3 moved out of his bed when he was just over 2. I wish i had done it before then as he wanted to sleep in a big bed like our double bed. when we took him on holiday there was no cot available so he slept on a bunk bed on the bottom bunk, we had ordered a bed before we went away. we already a the mattress so we put it on the floor in his room and that's where he slept until his bed arrived
  • We moved when my daughter was about 1 1/2 and switched her crib into a toddler bed. We put a regular twin bed in there when she was about 2 and she moved into it gradually all by herself over the next six months.
  • My daughter i took her out of the crib at age 16 months because she would never sleep in it ,,, so i thought well if i got her a big girl bed she would... the first couple of nights were ruff... but now she is 19 months old and she lloves her bed... dosent crawl out of it or anything...
  • When they could climb out by themseves
  • 1 Year old.
  • We changed our daughter's crib into a toddler bed when she was 1 1/2 yrs. We just recently got her a twin bed and she'll be four in a couple of months.
  • 2 1/2 years of age we went to toys r us and got her a princess bed.
  • 3 years old is the age when they understand the concept of staying in bed for bedtime a little better. My daughter turned 2 in July, and she is still in a crib. I would say the ultimate time to switch to a bed is either a) when they start climbing out or b) once they are potty trained for night.
  • I didn't have any intention of moving my son to a big boy bed until he was able to climb out of his crib. I told my husband that and sure enough, the very next they he had managed to get out of his crib and came knocking at the door to be let out. That was when he was 18 months old. The following morning we set up his big boy bed and has been doing great with it ever since (he'll be three in November) :).
  • A little before 3 when we started potty training. He never climbed out of his crib, but if you're potty training they have to be able to get up and go if they need to.
  • 13 months.
  • I moved my son out of his babybed into a toddler bed with rails when he was about a year and a half. I caught him climbing out of it to play when he was supposed to be napping.
  • My son was 2 years and 3 months old. He started climbing out of the crib at the lowest level and I knew it was time then. I actually got lucky and didn't have once complaint from him. He was proud of his new bed and so happy to have it
  • My son slept in a crib until he started climbing out at 18 months. I was afraid he would hurt himself if he landed wrong on the hard wood floor, so at that time he got his big boy bed!! It was shaped like a car he loved it!!
  • when potty trained
  • I moved my son out of his crib at 18 months. He was fine. It only took one night of me laying with him and that was it. I did put a gate at his door...for safety reasons. I did also get him a toddler bed instead of a twin bed so it would not be too overwhelming. He picked out the bedding and we made it fun.
  • My baby never slept in her crib she always wanted to sleep with mommy, but she is 3 now and she sleeps happily in her own room.
  • When they climbed out of the crib, they moved to a big bed.
  • I think it varies. If you feel your child is ready to come out of the crib then he/she probably is. Just remember to use safety gates for the top of the stairs and anything harmfull is put out of reach in the bathroom.
  • Mines usually slept with me,But when she didnt she slept in her crib i moved her into a toddler bed at 6-9 months
  • I just moved my daughter from her crib. 16 months old. I just knew she was ready, she hates being trapped pack & play or excer-saucer type things she never liked. DDa does not really like this idea. But I'm the MUM.
  • well my daughter skye just turned 3 on the 16th of feb. one of her birthday presents was a dora the exsplorer bed. out with the crib in with the big girl bed. she loves it so much..ofcourse we put siderails on it seeying that skye sleeps like a drunken maniac. lol
  • My son went into a full size single bed at 11 months. He never climbed out of his crib, he just threw himself over the end and hit the floor. We felt it was dangerous so switched him over, it took a while to get him to stay in bed but it worked out.
  • 2 1/2 She did beautifully.
  • Around 2 years old. It's a good idea to move them to a toddler bed once you think they might be able to crawl out of their crib. But beware of early risers! My son likes to wake up super early and get into the bread!
  • My daughter's crib is a convertible one so the sliding side comes off to become a toddler bed. When she was about 20 months old we took the side off and just put a big body pillow on the floor for when she fell out. It didn't take her longer than a few weeks before she stopped falling out at all.
  • My daughter was 3 when we moved her to a big kid bed. We just moved into a new house so it seemed like a good time. The first night she woke up and went and slept on the couch. She's stayed in it ever since. It's been almost a yeat. Good luck.
  • Kara was 18 months. She was starting to climb on the rails.
  • My son who is 2 1/2 now slept in his at 14months because of me being pregnant again, he loved it and we have never had any problems. Now my daughter is the 14 months now and doesn't want anything to do with it. So really I think it just depends on your child and if you want to have a fight every night, personally I would rather sleep well and have her happy and sleeping well so whatever makes her happy. The other thing is she climbs out of her crib, I think she has a little monkey in her. Crib tents are like $40.00 at wal mart so we just bought her a bed at the same price, since she doesn't sleep in it yet though, I put up her pack and play and she can't climb out of it!:)
  • It depends on the child, but most can easily transition at 1 1/2 or 2 years old. 2 1/2 would be about the oldest b/c by then they are typically way too big for a crib.
  • I never used and will never use a crib. I go a completely different way on this subjet and what applies to co-sleeping going into a big kids bed dosen't really apply to crib users.
  • my boys 4 and still in crib good rule if still in diapers keep them in a crib hopfully this year will get his own bed
  • The first time they crawled out of the crib
  • Our daughters crib transformed into a toddler bed. We moved her to that at about age 2 1/2. Due purely to the fact that she kept trying to climb out. She did beautifully in it. By age 3 1/2 she was good with the potty and extremely tall for her age so we moved her to a twin bed a few months ago she will be 4 in august. She is 3 foot 3 1/2 inches tall, 53 slim pounds. Wears size 7/8 toddler clothes and size 12 shoes. The twin bed gives her more room to move and she loves her new princess bed.
  • MY SON IS 32 MONTHS OLD... HE LOVES LOVES LOVES HIS CRIB AND SLEEPS SO WELL I CAN'T TAKE IM OUT YET. HE TAKES 3 HOUR NAPS AND I HAVE TO WAKE HIM UP! LOL HE HAS SLEPT IN A BIG BED AND LOVED IT WITH HIS BIG SIS SO I KNOW HE WILL BE OK WITH IT WHEN ITS TIME TO MOVE HIM OUT OF THE CRIB! HE GOES TO BED NOW AT 8 IN THE CRIB. MY FAMILY THINK I AM NUTS FOR KEEPING HIM IN IT...BUT I STRONGLY DISAGREE!
  • The longer your child is in their crib the better. Around the age of 2 is when they usually start figuring out how to climb out of the crib. Depending on the child but once your child can climb out then it is time for a Big kid bed. I think my son's doctor said try to keep them in their crib until the age of 3. My son is 19 months and he has climbed in his crib once and it scared him and he hasen't done it it since. I am hoping to keep in in for another 5 or 6 months. Just depends on what kind of climber you have.
  • i think 3 is a good age to move to a big kid bed.. my daughter got her own room with the big kid bed at 3 decorated the room with princess theme and she loves it..
  • I took my son out of his crib when he was just over 2 becuase he could crawl out of it. When the child does not stay in the crib is when to move him to the bed.
  • These are all good comments. I enjoy talking about my kids and sharing advice/experiences though, so I wanted to comment as well. With both my kids, they had just turned 2.It wasn't the age or Dr.'s advice that made us decide, but the fact they were able and willing at all times to crawl out. We let them pick out there bedding and got them the fun kids beds. We also put in the gaurd rail on the outside to help with falling out and you still want to be careful on the amount of bedding, pillows, and stuffed creatures though. The transition for us was easy, and the kids too i think. As long as we keep the hallway light on and the doors open. Good Luck.
  • 18 months.2 reasons; his younger brother needed the crib and he was beginning to climb out and I didn`t want him to have a bad fall.I got him a little bed with rails and put a safety gate on his bedroom door so he couldn`t get out to the stairs.
