Crab grass is pretty durable, but grows in clumps. There's not much more, cutting out everything except for grass. Normal, usually 1st pick type of grass might handle, if you water it every day, or every other day, but not any less. Use fertilizer too.

Call around your local area and find out who may sell "native" grass seeds. Many native grasses have been all but eliminated. However, they are natively adapted to the region and can actually help improve the soil and some species/sources can often be found. Buffalo Grass is a good one for this part of the country. It can withstand harsh conditions and needs little water and doesn't look all that bad.
